WightFibre Art Cabinet wraps:
A series of custom-designed artworks adorn several WightFibre Cabinets.
These splendid pieces are predominantly crafted by Community Murals, led by Emma & Hollie. Due to their efforts, WightFibre boasts an array of stunning artworks that beautifully reflect the essence of the Island. Presented below is a selection of these freshly wrapped cabinets, accompanied by the initial, untouched artwork for your appreciation.
Cowes:
Nestled down a charming street near the centre of Cowes, there stands this WightFibre cabinet adorned with art. The mural features a range of local sights, including the RedJet ferry service arriving at the shore by the renowned fish and chip shop, Corries Cabin. Beyond it, a line of Cowes’ signature golden seaside cannons is visible, traditionally fired to mark the commencement of Cowes Week. Gazing out to sea, one can also discern wind turbines produced by Vestas, a firm with a manufacturing plant on the Island. Additionally, the mural prominently displays the Cowes Hammerhead Crane, an emblematic structure that celebrates England’s industrial engineering prowess and signifies Cowes’ rich shipbuilding legacy.
This design was crafted by the team at UKSA, not Community Murals. It highlights a variety of activities offered along the Medina River by UKSA, such as practical yachting and sailing courses. The mural also features wing surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, among others. Additionally, it depicts the UKSA’s main office hoisting the Royal Yachting Association flag, with a WightFibre sponsored van situated next to the building.
East Cowes:
Down Meadow Road, close to the iconic Osborne House, stands this vibrant cabinet. This piece of art displays a series of local landmarks. The Osborne Estate is depicted, once the residence of Queen Victoria. The artwork hints at the presence of the floating bridge, a chain ferry that traverses the River Medina and remains one of the few not replaced by a fixed bridge. The Red Funnel ferry is visible, with the Venture Quays hangar to its left, distinguished by the Union Jack adorning its front doors. Below Osborne House is the H.M.S. Cavalier Propeller Monument, a propeller gifted by Southern Water to the people of East Cowes to honour the memory of the shipbuilders and sailors who sacrificed their lives for the nation during World War II.
Newport:
Located at the heart of the Newport Bus Station, this cabinet stands prominently in front of the stop for the Number 9 bus. It features the St Thomas Minster to the right, the principal Anglican church of the Isle of Wight, which gained its minster status in 2008. On the opposite side is the Quay Arts Centre, situated at the River Medina’s source and renowned as the Island’s premier art gallery. To the left are the statues and gateway leading to the Isle of Wight Festival, an iconic event established in 1968. At the centre is Parkhurst Forest, adjacent to Carisbrooke Castle, the historic fortification where Charles I was held before his execution in 1649.
Near Saint Mary’s Hospital, thsi cabinet has been installed, featuring the striking sculpture ‘Land Sea Light Koan’ by American artist Liliane Lijn. This multicoloured cone is situated beside the cabinet, in front of the main hospital building, which serves as the sole hospital on the Island. Adjacent to the hospital is HMP Isle of Wight, a large prison formed by the amalgamation of the Island’s former prisons, Albany and Parkhurst, housing over 1,000 inmates. Alongside, two individuals are depicted cycling on the Red Squirrel Trail cycle path.
Near JR zone is where you will find this brand new cabinet down Manner View in Newport. The cabinet contains such iconic areas such as the isle of wight radio station near centre left, the platform one’s college of music in the centre and the innovation centre to the far left.
Ryde:
Located adjacent to the Co-Op near the Commodore Cinema in Ryde, this cabinet displays the golden sands of Appley Beach with the notable Appley Tower perched to the side. Above, a rescue helicopter patrols the sky. Beside Appley Tower is the depicted HMS Sirius Memorial, commemorating the historic first fleet’s departure to Australia from this shore. Additionally, the cabinet features the famed Victorian pier, the UK’s second longest, and the visage of St Cecilia’s Abbey on its reverse side.
Sandown:
This vibrant cabinet is located near the beach in Sandown, an area famed for its dinosaur fossils, courtesy of the picturesque local white cliffs and the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, both represented as converging on the shore. The golden sands of the beach host Sandown’s leisure pier, extending over half the cabinet’s length. Atop the cliff sits the Yarborough Monument, a grand granite obelisk honoring Charles Pelham. Above, a paraglider and a Spitfire plane are visible, the latter appearing to take off from the nearby airport.
Wootton:
Adjacent to Wootton Bridge, you can find the next cabinet. The artwork depicts the eponymous Wootton Bridge with Wootton Creek flowing beneath. The bridge, a county structure, features adjustable sluices between its arches, which regulate the water level in the old mill pond situated above. To the left, one can glimpse the Isle of Wight steam railway, a heritage line traversing 5 1/2 miles of the Island’s countryside from Wootton to Smallbrook Junction. To the right lies one of Wootton’s 23 cycle paths scattered throughout the town, this particular one being the renowned Red Squirrel Trail.
